The publication provides the list of tree species recommended for breeding under climate and salinity conditions of northern parts of Karakalpakstan, and provides recommendations and techniques for their cultivation.

Global climate change trends are evident in Karakalpakstan. Increase in amplitude of annual temperatures by 1.0-1.5 ° C, as well as increase in precipitation levels combined with the fact that share of the Aral Sea in global moisture transfer has decreased 6 times in the past fifty years are making conditions for growing trees more difficult. Despite that, tree and shrub plantations can play an important role in helping the population to improve living conditions and adapt to climate change. A scientifically chosen range of tree and shrub species planted around settlements can protect the population from air pollution and dust as well as enrich air with oxygen and provide favourable microclimate. Salinity and soil quality aggravates the situation with plant cultivation in Karakalpakstan. This however does not mean that present conditions are not suitable for forests growing. Like other plants, tree species react differently to the degree of salinization, their composition and the depth of their occurrence in the soil layer. In the past decades scientists of Karakalpakstan have tested various tree and shrub species for acclimatization in the conditions of Karakalpakstan and have drawn lists of plants appropriate for cultivation. Current manual provides detailed description of domestic and foreign selection of trees appropriate for growing in saline conditions of soil, including such trees as Ailánthus altíssima, Platycladus orientalis, Ulmus pinnato-ramosa, Gleditsia triacanthos, Catalpa bignonioides Walt, Acer campestre L., Acer negundo L., Juniperus virginiana, Robinia pseudoacacia, Sophora japonica L, Sophora japonica L, Haloxylon aphyllum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh (Latin). Each tree specification includes characteristics of the species, its ecological distinctiveness and economic value. The publication concludes with concrete recommendations on agricultural technology for growing trees in conditions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. In particular, it draws on the methods of cultivation of tree and shrub species in complex climatic and soil conditions of Karakalpakstan and preparation of planting material.
